Vietnam campaigns widely for energy savings

This is the 15th year Vietnam has participated in the Earth Hour Campaign implemented by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Vietnam under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The theme of the Earth Hour 2023 campaign is “Save electricity, Form a habit”, which is also the message of the Prime Minister’s Electricity Saving Program for the 2023-2025 period.

“The program wants all citizens and businesses nationwide to join hands to protect the environment, save energy towards a green future and help Vietnam achieve its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050,” said Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Dang Hoang An.

Vo Quang Lam, Vice President of Vietnam Electricity (EVN), said communities are called upon to save energy and protect the environment not only during one hour but 365 days of the year.

Applying information technology, EVN is disseminating electricity saving and environmental protection contents on the group’s digital media channels as well as on zalo, fanpage, tiktok apps and in various forms like attractive user-friendly infographics, photos and video clips. EVN’s units were requested to run the program at their customer transaction locations and headquarters, mobilizing organizations, agencies and customers to turn off unnecessary lights and electrical devices in response to the campaign.

An Earth Hour 2023 race was held by the Assistance Office for the Steering Committee of Vietnam National Energy Program in the 2019-2030 period in coordination with the Industry and Trade Magazine to further raise people’s awareness of energy savings.

In addition, EVN has coordinated with the Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE) project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Actions (BMWK) to organize a March 25 event themed “Clean Energy – Green Earth” at Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Lake.

Vo Quang Lam said although the average annual power output saved in the one hour was estimated at about 400,000 kWh, the campaign is designed to increase community awareness and action.

The program has attracted widespread participation by young people and children through creative displays, including visual models explaining the operational mechanism of renewable energy (wind, solar and biomass power), an area assembling solar panel models, a tree planting area, as well as an onstage knowledge contest.
