VATM achieves sky-high progress

(VEN) - Over the past 30 years, the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) has provided air navigation services to ensure safety of more than 11 million flights within the country’s airspace and has enhanced its productivity, quality and efficiency. Its total revenue has reached almost VND65 trillion from air traffic management operations, and it pays more than VND32 trillion to the state budget.

Proud 30-year journey

VATM will celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 20, 2023. The state-owned corporation has contributed greatly to the Vietnamese aviation industry’s development, in particular, and Vietnam’s socioeconomic development, industrialization and modernization.

VATM provides air navigation services for all civil and military aircraft (when delegated) operating at airports nationwide, as well as over Vietnam’s sovereign airspace. Specifically, VATM offers services over an area of nearly 1.2 million square kilometers, covering almost 30 provinces and cities across the country, directly providing flight assurance services on 35 and 36 domestic and international air routes, respectively. This includes the Ho Chi Minh Flight Information Region with a high density of flights and a key role in flights over the East Sea.

VATM has continuously innovated and improved its air traffic management procedures, optimized the airspace’s organization, applied advanced air traffic management technology at airports with a high density of flight activities while working with foreign organizations to optimize the airspace and air traffic control procedures in Vietnam.

According to Pham Viet Dung, Chair of VATM’s Members' Council, the corporation has contributed greatly to improving the quality of air traffic control services, improving air traffic management technology and meeting the requirements domestic and international airlines.

Major projects

VATM put into operation the Ho Chi Minh Air Traffic Control Center in 2006 and inaugurated the Hanoi Air Traffic Control Center in 2015. In addition, the corporation upgraded and built dozens of new air traffic control towers, including complex, large-scale projects with high technical and technological requirements such as the Noi Bai (Hanoi) and Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City) airports.

General Director of VATM Doan Huu Gia said the corporation has started building the 24,000-square-meter air traffic control tower at the Long Thanh International Airport east of Ho Chi Minh City. The corporation has re-divided airspace, opened more direct routes, and applied new air traffic management procedures with advanced technology to improve air traffic management capacity and ease congestion at large airports.

The aviation sector has been growing rapidly after the COVID-19 pandemic, creating both opportunities and challenges for VATM.

VATM will strive to become a leading air navigation services provider with reliable, advanced safety management systems in Southeast Asia, ensure safety for all flights in the assigned area, operate 1.5 million flights/year, meet international standards recognized by Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and improve air traffic management capacity in Vietnam’s responsibility airspace. The corporation’s safety management system will meet all requirements of the International Aviation Community and be as developed as those of advanced countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
