Tree planting campaign targets carbon neutrality

(VEN) - Vietnam has embarked on a nationwide tree planting campaign designed to benefit the environment and enhance the quality of life.

Protecting soil

Following severe floods and landslides in September and October 2020 in Vietnam’s central region, the Prime Minister launched an initiative targeting the planting of one billion trees over five years.

According to the plan, about 700 million new trees will be planted in urban, rural areas and industrial parks from 2021 to 2025, and 300 million forest trees on bare land and hills, including perennial trees for wind, flooding and landslide protection.

The campaign’s most urgent focus is planting in watershed forests to help prevent soil erosion in the rainy season, increase the groundwater level in the dry season, and reduce wind intensity in the stormy season.

Green trees not only yield economic benefits but also ecological, landscape and environmental ones, especially given major crises such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and epidemics.

Mobilizing resources

Vietnam’s forest coverage has reached about 42 percent, but is unevenly distributed. The rate of urban green space is only two sq.m per person, much lower than the world standard of 15 sq.m per person. The program expects this rate to increase to four sq.m per person by 2025.

The campaign is comprised of various collaborative projects. For example, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Bac Giang City People’s Committee and Honda Vietnam joined forces this year to plant about 1,100 trees in the northern city to create a green campus at the provincial sports gymnasium, and make it an ideal place for people to play and practice sports.

Bac Giang City People’s Committee Chair Dang Dinh Hoan said the city had planted trees on 17 roads and streets, with total budget of over VND60 billion contributed by many organizations and businesses. Since 2021, the city has planted over 500,000 trees, exceeding 50 percent of the 2021-2025 target.

Daiki Mihara, General Director of Honda Vietnam, said the company had already carried out two afforestation projects - in Hoa Binh Province (2003-2011) and in Bac Kan Province (2013-2020), as well as a tree planting program in Vo Nhai District of Thai Nguyen Province in 2022. Honda hopes this year’s program in Bac Giang will contribute to a greener life and a clean environment for local residents while ensuring the national goal and Honda’s orientation on environmental protection of carbon emission neutrality by 2050.

Many countries around the world have been planting trees and restoring ecosystems. If each Vietnamese citizen plants 10 to 15 trees over five years, the country expects to reach its carbon neutral target.
