Textile, garment industries going green

(VEN) - The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) is finalizing a multi-year development strategy of the textile, garment, leather and footwear industries to be submitted for government approval. The strategy includes policies, technologies and development of materials to help the industries join the global market’s green development trend.

A volatile year

Vu Duc Giang, Chair of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), said that although exports are forecast to face difficulties in 2023, Vietnam’s textile and garment industry is still setting a US$45-47 billion export turnover target, some 10 percent over the 2022 result.

Vietnam needs to adopt policies to encourage investment in green production

Looking back at 2022, the VITAS chief highlighted the volatile developments experienced by the domestic textile and garment enterprises. In the first half of the year, textile and garment export turnover reached US$22.3 billion, up 17.7 percent over the same period in 2021. However, since August 2022, textile and garment exports have slowed, declining 3.3 percent year-on-year in October. Despite the difficulties, Vietnam’s textile and garment export turnover in 2022 is expected to reach about US$42 billion.

According to Le Tien Truong, General Director of the Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex), the group had already completed the profit plan for the year by the end of the second quarter of 2022, but orders have been dropping sharply since August.

Long-term strategy

The green factor is gradually being legalized in key export markets of Vietnam’s textile and garment. The European Union, for example, has adopted a circular, sustainable development textiles strategy and green standards for garments exported to this market.

Accordingly, experts are proposing that the Vietnamese government adopted policies to encourage businesses to invest in green production.

“When developing the strategy, the drafting team carefully studied the EU environmental requirements, proposing appropriate solutions so that Vietnam's textile, garment and footwear industries can adapt and integrate into the global supply chain,” said Pham Tuan Anh, Deputy Director of the Industry Agency under the MoIT. Among the proposed solutions are mechanisms and policies to encourage the import of source technology, and high and clean technologies; encourage research and technology transfer in production of raw and auxiliary materials that cannot be produced domestically, and of high-quality textiles and footwear in accordance with international standards.

From the perspective of enterprises, Le Tien Truong said that green products will help save waste treatment and environmental protection costs.

In order to catch up with the green trend, state policies can only help in orientation. For their part, enterprises need to research and invest in advanced production lines and equipment, use environmentally-friendly chemicals and dyes, reuse raw materials and waste, and strictly and effectively comply with regulations on environmental protection.
