Phu Xuyen develops craft villages

(VEN) - Phu Xuyen District in Hanoi has planned to prioritize local craft village conservation and development as part of its industrial and craft development strategy.

Phu Xuyen has some of the oldest craft villages in the country, including Chuyen My which specializes in making mother-of-pearl inlaid lacquer ware, Xuan La which specializes in making toy figurines and Phu Yen which concentrates on producing leather footwear. Some local products have been widely sold in the domestic market and exported to several European countries.

According to Deputy Chairman of the Phu Xuyen District People’s Committee, the committee has drafted Program 9 on Craft Village Development for the 2011-2015 Period, with the intention of boosting local craft production value, sales and promotion while accelerating rural development. After four years of implementation, the program has partly improved local living standards via creating more jobs for rural workers and increasing incomes. Several local craft villages have gradually thrived thanks to some local key craft producers.

According to statistics, all 156 villages in the district have been involved in craft production as of October 2015, including 78 under craft preservation and development programs (an increase of six compared with 2014) and 40 recognized by the city. Despite economic difficulties, craft villages in Phu Xuyen have maintained and developed production and expect to earn VND2.85 trillion this year, a 5.3 percent increase over 2014 and accounting for 66.1 percent of the district’s total production value.

Phu Yen in the coming year will focus on the development of craft village tourism and improve craft product quality and competitiveness while ensuring local sustainable development. “In an effort to assist local craft villages to develop sustainably to achieve their set targets, Phu Xuyen will accelerate implementing its industrial cluster investment projects in Dai Thang, Phu Tuc, Chuyen My, Phu Yen and Van Tu, building a craft product shopping center, encourage and assist craft producers to invest in advanced production technologies, design and branding, and signposting for craft villages,” Thuoc said.

The Phu Xuyen District People’s Committee will suggest the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to support the establishment of several tours to several craft villages in the district.
