(VEN) - Having identified transport infrastructure as a strategic breakthrough, Quang Ninh Province has been investing in a modern transport system, shortening the distance between localities inside and outside the province and bolstering the connection between national, regional and international traffic networks.

In recent years, Quang Ninh Province has built 176km of expressways and the first private cruise port and airport in Vietnam. This success is attributed to innovative and creative thinking, and provincial leaders’ aspirations for sustainable development.

Most recently, the Van Don-Mong Cai Expressway was inaugurated after more than three years of construction, making Quang Ninh the province with the largest number of expressway kilometers in the country.

In addition, transport infrastructure in Quang Ninh’s rural, mountainous, border and island areas has also been improved over the past decade. The province has upgraded thousands of rural traffic projects using capital resources from the national target program on building new-style rural areas. So far, all the provincial rural communes have concrete roads.

Opportunities for economic development

The development of Quang Ninh’s transportation system will help the province take full advantage of its geographical position as the gateway of the Northern Key Economic Region in trading with Northeast Asian countries and the Greater Mekong Subregion and in serving as a connection point of the ASEAN-China free trade area.

At the end of July 2022, four localities linked by the 300km Hanoi-Mong Cai Expressway – Hai Phong City, and Quang Ninh, Hai Duong and Hung Yen provinces – signed a cooperation agreement on promoting the economic connection of the eastern expressway, which provides the best transport infrastructure in Vietnam’s northern region.

This expressway axis also links a series of industrial parks, urban areas, three international airports (Noi Bai, Cat Bi, Van Don) and a system of international seaports. Economic linkages will exploit strengths of each province and city.

For example, Quang Ninh will benefit in terms of tourism, services and its production-trade chain associated with the Chinese market. For Hai Phong, the economic linkages will provide advantages in seaport and logistics, while in Hai Duong, the linkages will bring into play its human resources, land, the strength of the mechanical and manufacturing industries and its adjacent location to Hanoi. For Hung Yen Province, the advantages lie in accelerated urbanization and potential for industrial development as well as high-tech agriculture.

The development of infrastructure, especially transport infrastructure, has greatly facilitated Quang Ninh’s socioeconomic and tourism development.

According to the Quang Ninh provincial planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, the province will create traffic corridors associated with economic and urban corridors, targeting to become a centrally-run city.
