Export opportunities for craft products

(VEN) - There are more than 2,000 craft villages nationwide, creating jobs for over 10 million rural workers. Last year’s craft export value reached nearly US$1.6 billion thanks to a significant increase in orders from Japan and China, in addition to craft product quality improvements, according to experts.

The shift in craft product orders from China to Vietnam resulted from increased production costs in China due to China’s policy on increasing the minimum wage, longer delivery times and higher requirements for minimum order quantities.

In recent years, Vietnamese craft producers have focused on improving the quality and design of their products based on consumer feedback from markets abroad, and therefore, secured more orders from foreign importers, according to experts.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Hanoi Gift Show 2015, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Ho Thi Kim Thoa said Vietnam has completed negotiations on free trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership and South Korea-Vietnam and EU-Vietnam free trade agreements, which could open up major opportunities for Vietnamese exports, especially for fine arts exports to both traditional and emerging markets.

Hanoi is considered the cradle of handicrafts in Vietnam and home to 1,350 craft villages, including nearly 1,000 fine arts craft villages and tens of thousands of fine arts enterprises, including more than 3,000 fine arts exporters.

In recent years, Hanoi has facilitated local craft village development through the adoption of various effective support mechanisms and incentives related to craft product design, production, advertisement, branding, trade promotion and market expansion. In addition, it has also focused on vocational training for craft workers and export promotion for craft producers. “The city has urged local craft producers to apply advanced production technologies with a view to reducing production costs while improving product quality and design,” said Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade Tran Thi Phuong Lan.

Many experts recommend that craft enterprises should focus on middle-class markets matching their production capacity, raw materials and working skills with the intention of promoting advantageous exports. Moreover, they should strengthen business links as well as promote the value and competitiveness of Vietnamese craft products.
