EVN powers up international cooperation

(VEN) - International cooperation is one of the important advantages of Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the country’s largest power company, in the modernization of the power industry.

Modernizing national electricity system

Over the years, EVN has strengthened cooperation with a series of major international organizations and energy groups from countries such as the United States, Germany, Denmark, France, Laos, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and China to meet development requirements of the national power system.

International cooperation has contributed to Vietnam’s modern power grid

Specifically, in the 2010-2020 period, the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) supported EVN with five technical assistance programs of nearly US$3.6 million. They included the “Information Technology Roadmap for the EVNNPT” (IT Roadmap); technical assistance and overall architecture for smart grids of the Central Power Corporation in the 2015-2020 period, with a vision to 2025; research and development of energy storage systems in Vietnam; research and development of the gas-to-power project in southern Vietnam.

In addition, the US partners supported EVN in the fields of smart electricity, renewable energy, and sustainable finance.

EVN has also promoted international cooperation activities to realize Vietnam’s climate change commitments. It discussed with Japanese partners about clean coal technology and reached agreement with the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Electricite de France (EDF) on financing of EUR1 million to facilitate EVN’s energy transition.

Electricity purchase and sale

One of the EVN’s strategic cooperations is with the China Southern Power Grid Company (CSG), which started nearly 20 years ago in cross-border electricity purchases at voltage levels of 220kV and 110kV. Currently, the two sides are cooperating under a signed power purchase agreement for the 2022-2025 period.

The Vietnamese and Laotian governments have signed a memorandum of understanding on the development of hydropower projects and electricity imports from Laos (in 2016). EVN also promoted power purchases from Electricity of Laos (EDL) and Electricity of Laos Generation Public Company (EDL-Gen). Currently, EVN sells electricity through voltage levels of 220kV-22kV-35kV at nine locations near the border between the two countries with commercial electricity output of about 50 million kWh/year. The government of Vietnam has approved electricity import from Laos, and EVN has signed 18 power purchase agreements (PPAs) to buy electricity from 23 projects in Laos.

EVN has also promoted cooperation with the world’s large financial institutions on loans to implement a series of investment projects in electricity and power grid infrastructure. These include the World Bank, German Agency for International Cooperation, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), German Credit Institute for Reconstruction, the Bank of Japan, and more.

Through international cooperation programs, EVN has made effective use of support from foreign partners, and developed into a large prestigious energy group in the region.
