5G is expected to play a major role in industry digitalization and Industry 4.0 in Vietnam

The Digital Era:

Previous generations of mobile networks addressed consumers predominantly for voice and SMS in 2G, web browsing in 3G, and higher-speed data and video streaming in 4G. The transition from 4G to 5G will serve both consumers and multiple industries.

The latest Ericsson Mobility Report confirms that 5G is growing rapidly. Mobile data traffic is estimated to surge by eight times during the forecast. In 2023, cellular IoT connections is predicted to reach an estimated 3.5 billion, meaning that more than 20 percent of mobile data traffic worldwide is expected to be carried by 5G networks, which is 1.5 times more than the total 4G/3G/2G traffic today. This development will bring new opportunities for people, businesses and society in the near future.

5G will be a key enabler of the future digital world. It will bring about new service capabilities for industrial stakeholders thanks to the unprecedented on-demand performance and real-time reactivity. For example, in 5G a smart transportation system will be capable of connecting to millions of networked devices, taking real-time, intelligent and autonomous decisions.

Amongst other benefits, 5G will allow for heavy machinery to be controlled remotely. This lowers the risk of injury in hazardous environments and means that work can be completed in a more effective way. Similarly, industries like manufacturing and mining will experience better efficiency and reduced costs.

Speaking on the topic of Industry digitalization and the role Industry 4.0 will play, states Denis Brunetti, President of Ericsson Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos and Co-Chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam ” The concept of ‘Industry 4.0’ is going to change the way Vietnam manufactures and designs products. Driven by the power of big data, high computing capacity, artificial intelligence and analytics, Industry 4.0 aims to completely digitize the manufacturing sector.” He urges Vietnam to accelerate its adoption of the 4th Industrial revolution.

When is 5G coming to Vietnam?

5G is no longer an abstract concept, but is rapidly becoming a reality. Over the world, Ericsson has agreements with 38 operators and expects to complete some commercial deployments by the end of 2018 to move 5G from idea to reality.

When asked about the appropriate time for Vietnam to launch 5G, states Denis “We expect the 5G networks to be available in Vietnam in 2021. 4G is the foundation of 5G, and operators in Vietnam need to make sure their 4G networks are in shape and 5G ready. The combination of our expanded radio portfolio and 5G support for radios already deployed in the field will support a smooth evolution from 4G to 5G for Vietnamese operators.”

“We firmly believe that countries that enable early movers to 5G will have a competitive advantage on the global market, as their industries will be able to accelerate in digital transformation. Industries that will benefit the most from 5G are those that can leverage on the high speeds, ultra-low latency or ultra-high reliability that 5G can provide – to create innovative products or services, provide better service, increase efficiency, or improve safety.” said Mr. Denis Brunetti.

2018 is the year 5G networks go commercial as well as for large-scale deployments of cellular IoT. These technologies promise new capabilities that will impact people’s lives and transform industries.
