Addressing the opening ceremony of the eight-day show, Le Viet Duyen, Viet Nam's consul general in Perth, said his country is a young and new market, but is the fastest growing one in Southeast Asia for Australian products.
From being an under-developed agricultural country, Viet Nam now leads the world in the production of a number of items like coffee, rice, cashew, and pepper, he said.
Viet Nam is the third largest market for agricultural products from Western Australia – whose capital is Perth -- and the second largest market for Australian livestock, he said.
The event offers a good chance to strengthen co-operation and exchanges between Viet Nam and Western Australia in the economic, trade, cultural, and educational fields and people-to-people exchanges, he added.
Western Australia's Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Ken Baston said Viet Nam has become an important partner for his state with bilateral trade expanding strongly to nearly AUD1.2 billion last year.
The state mainly exports wheat, potato, beef, and lamb to Viet Nam.
The annual Perth Royal Show is the biggest and longest agricultural fair in Western Australia with a history of more than 100 years./.
