Mobile carrier VNPT VinaPhone on January 18 began trialling 4G LTE Advanced services on the island of Phu Quoc and in Ho Chi Minh City.
During the pilot programme, customers can experience data-intensive services such as mobile TV, mobile broadcasting and video conferencing at six venues including three in Ho Chi Minh City and three in Phu Quoc.
Results show these services run at much higher speeds than the 3G connection, have lower latency and more stable coverage than 3G.
During the trial period, VinaPhone’s 4G signals will cover the entire Phu Quoc Island and several districts in central Ho Chi Minh City with a total of 150 broadcasting stations.
Once approved, VinaPhone plans to install more stations in centrally governed cities including Hanoi, HCMC, Da Nang, Hai Phong and Can Tho as well as a number of provinces with a large market share such as Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang and Nam Dinh.
The mobile service provider said 4G costs would not be higher than 3G for the same amount of data and consumers could even enjoy preferential packages when using 4G services during the trial period.
In December last year, the military-run Viettel Telecom also begun trialling 4G services in the coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau./.
