Five Vietnamese weightlifters will take part in the 2015 Asian Championships to be held in Phuket, Thailand from September 3 to 12.
Vietnam’s second-rated weightlifter Tran Le Quoc Toan
The team consists of Tran Le Quoc Toan, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan, Nguyen Ngoc Trung, Nguyen Thi Thuy and Vuong Thi Hien.
Top lifter Thach Kim Tuan will not be included in Vietnam’s lineup in Thailand as he is currently focusing on training for the 2015 World Championships in the US this November, with a view to securing a berth at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
The country’s hopes for Asian medals are mainly pinned on Tran Le Quoc Toan, who bagged three gold medals in the men’s 56kg category at the recent 2015 National Weightlifting Championships in Ho Chi Minh City.
After their Asian campaign, key lifters of the national team will leave for a training course in Hungary before heading to the US to compete in the world’s most important tournament of the year, the 2015 IWF World Championships.
2016 Olympic berths for weightlifting will be calculated based on the team achievements of each national delegation at the two world championships in 2014 and 2015.
Vietnam finished 21st in the men’s team performance at last year’s competition in Kazakhstan, with Thach Kim Tuan blasting a snatch gold medal and two silvers in clean and jerk, and total lifts. The team are targeting to defend last year’s results at the upcoming world championships in Houston, aiming to secure three official tickets to Rio, which will be granted to the national delegations ranked between 19th and 24th after two world qualification tournaments./.
