“Vietnam always in my heart”

His latest contribution to his homeland is expected to draw investment in Vietnam from Dubai and the Middle East. On December 11, the chairman of the SAPA Thale Group, billionaire Mai Vu Minh, signed a bilateral investment cooperation agreement in Ho Chi Minh City with Fahad Al Gergawi, Vice President of the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies (WAIPA) and CEO of the Dubai Investment Development Agency (Dubai FDI). Also present were Rene Bernad Beil, CEO of Beaufort Global, and Jamal Khang, a representative of the Milcon Gulf Group.

Two days later, they came to Hanoi to meet Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Vu Dai Thang to promote the agreement’s implementation through a number of projects in the fields of finance and banking, high technology, infrastructure, environment, energy, transport, real estate, hotel and tourism.

We will do our utmost for businesses of Dubai, in particular, and those from the United Arab Emirates, in general, to increase investment in Vietnam,” Minh said at the meeting. “We believe this bilateral investment cooperation program will pave the way for Vietnam to attract more investment from Dubai and the Middle East, while at the same time promoting economic cooperation through joint ventures between Vietnamese and Dubai companies,” he added.

Millions to startups

Billionaire Mai Vu Minh has spent a lot of time doing things that he believes would be good for his native country. “There’s no easy way to achieve success. But I’m always willing to do something that can help improve the lives of Vietnamese people and contribute to the growth of the Vietnamese economy,” he said.

Although he lives abroad, Vietnam is always in his heart, says Mai Vu Minh. Every year, he donates considerable sums to Vietnamese students and startup support funds. He was one of the sponsors for APEC Year 2017, which Vietnam hosted.

During an official visit to Germany in 2017, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met and praised Mai Vu Minh and the SAPA Thale Group for their contributions to the Vietnamese communities at home and abroad. In 2017, the Bloomberg Terminal reported that Minh had invested US$400 million in startups in Vietnam and other countries.

Minh is also a familiar figure at global events, seen walking alongside such leaders as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In late November 2018, Countess Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild, a member of the world’s richest family, came to Ho Chi Minh City to visit her friend, billionaire Mai Vu Minh.
