Vietnamese businesses embrace sci-tech revolution

(VEN) - From pesticide-spraying drones to automatic chicken eggs collection, Vietnamese businesses are enthusiastically embracing state-of-the-art technologies in management, administration and production to improve labor productivity and increase competitiveness.

In October 2019, the Loc Troi Group started testing drones for spraying pesticide on 10,000ha of rice fields in the western provinces of Long An, Dong Thap and Hau Giang. The results were positive with labor productivity increasing from 15 to 30 times, the amount of pesticides reduced by 30 percent, and the loss of rice also decreasing (150-200kg per hectare) since workers were not stepping on the crops.

The DABACO Group Joint Stock Company has also invested strongly in implementing science and technology (sci-tech) along with upgrading farms and animal breeds to the same quality and productivity level of foreign countries. Specifically, the company has applied a closed-cage system using imported equipment with fully automated feeding, drinking and temperature adjustment; automated egg collecting and hatching systems with UV sterilization lines to treat eggs; and a fully automated individual productivity evaluation system in order to provide the market with products meeting HACCP food safety standards.

The DTK Phu Tho Company Limited has also applied advanced technologies from Japan, the US and Israel in raising hens to produce Vietnamese-branded clean egg products. With an investment of about VND800 billion, and expected capacity of 175 million eggs per year, its egg production factory operates under a completely closed, strictly controlled and automated process from feed, care, nursing to product packaging.

The TH Truemilk Group had applied 4.0 technology in concentrated dairy farming, with a closed process it calls “From green grass field to a glass of clean milk”. At TH dairy farms, most activities including care, management and milking are fully automated.

These examples show that more and more domestic enterprises are boldly applying advanced technology in order to increase added product value and competitiveness in the context of broader international integration.

A representative of the DABACO Group JSC said that technology is an inevitable trend but it is also costly and requires supportive state policies. However, to ease the burden on its budget, the government needs to plan strategies to attract official development assistance (ODA) and foreign direct investment (FDI) capital and establish a linkage with domestic enterprises to promote high-tech application.

In recent years, there has been a clear change in policy-making to help enterprises adopt sci-tech innovation. In addition to sci-tech programs, the National Technology Innovation Fund (NATIF) was founded to provide preferential loans, subsidized loan interest rates and loan guarantees, and to reimburse expenses for research, technology transfer and innovation projects implemented by organizations and individuals.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade, for its part, seeks to raise awareness of the profound effects of sci-tech on production management and development in value chains, which create competitive Vietnamese-branded products and goods with high added value.

The science-technology industry will focus on support for enterprises applying and innovating technology, synchronously implementing solutions to improve productivity, product and quality.
