Park Hang-seo’s side have qualified for the knockout round as the Group D winners, following their straight victories over Pakistan (3-0), Nepal (2-0) and Japan (1-0).
The men’s football at the 2018 Asiad features 25 Olympic teams competing in a round robin in six groups. The top two teams from each group, together with the four best third-placed teams, will advance to the Round of 16.
According to the 2018 Asiad organising committee’s regulations, the winners of Group A, B, C and D will compete against the third-placed teams for berths in the quarterfinals.
Specifically, the Group A leaders will face a third-place team of Group C, D or E following that order of priority. The Group B and Group C winners will take on a third-place team of Group A, C or D, while the leaders of Group C will play a third place team from Group A, B or F.
As the Group D winners, Vietnam U23s will encounter the third place team of one of the three groups, B, E and F, following that order of priority. That means if the third place team of Group B, Thailand, were one of the four best third-placed teams, they would face Vietnam in the Round of 16. But because Thailand are not, Bahrain, who rank third among the four best third-placed team, have been named as Vietnam’s knockout stage opponents.
