Dinh Huu Phi, director general of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam under the Ministry of Science and Technology, said the French Development Agency (AFD) conducted a pre-feasibility study on the implementation of a number of activities to support the development of geographical indications in Vietnam. According to its findings, the efficiency of geographical indication protection must be improved and display consistency.

On the basis of the pre-feasibility study, the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Ministry of Science and Technology submitted a coordination agreement to the government for approval. The coordination is important as it lays the foundations for the three ministries to improve state management, enhance efficiency in geographical indications, as well as increase value of protected products and competitiveness of Vietnamese products in the world market.

Geographical indication is a name or symbol used on products which have a specific geographical location or origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are related to that origin. Geographical indication is increasingly proving its importance in agricultural and rural development, contributing to the preservation of traditional cultural values, development of trade and production activities, as well as improving the added value of Vietnamese agricultural products.

The system of Vietnamese legal documents on the registration of geographical indications is relatively adequate. In addition, government, ministries, departments and localities have paid great attention to development and management of geographical indications. Many policies and solutions to support the development of geographical indications have been adopted and put into practice.

With the role and tasks assigned in the implementation of a coordination agreement, the National Office of Intellectual

Property of Vietnam will cooperate with the Agro Processing and Market Development Authority under the Ministry of

Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Industry and

Trade to effectively implement the contents of the coordination agreement.
