(VEN) - The government is planning an enterprise support program including exemptions, reductions, extensions and deferrals of taxes, fees and loan interest for businesses hit by the Coronavirus disease (Covid-19), in addition to preparing a comprehensive economic recovery plan for the post-disease period, focusing on stimulus programs and support based on monetary and fiscal policy.
Fighting the pandemic
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked ministries, departments and localities to make greater efforts to implement the government’s dual task of fighting the Covid-19 pandemic and promoting socioeconomic development. As of mid-March, the Ministry of Health had reported more than 60 infections in Vietnam, including 16 who were cured and left hospitals.
Prime Minister Phuc told World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Vietnam Kidong Park during a reception in Hanoi on March 14 that Vietnam has seen Covid-19 prevention as a major task of the government, all ministries, agencies, localities and the whole people. Vietnam has mobilized the entire political system, including the military and public security forces, in the fight against the pandemic, PM Phuc said, adding that the country has undertaken many stronger measures to contain infections from different sources.
Park praised Vietnam’s effective efforts in promoting scientific research and strengthening infrastructure arrangement, including mobilizing on-the-spot resources and enhancing quarantine.
At a March 9 meeting with the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control, PM Phuc also affirmed Vietnam’s sufficient capability, resources and experience to control the outbreak, noting that the government has always made people’s health a top priority.
Due to the spread of Covid-19 in European nations, Vietnam decided to temporarily suspend entry for tourists from the Schengen countries and/or the United Kingdom, or have visited or transited through these areas within 14 days preceding their expected entry into Vietnam.
Promoting socioeconomic development
“We accept a sacrifice to short-term economic profits to protect public health,” PM Phuc said. He also reiterated the government’s dual task of fighting the pandemic and promoting socioeconomic development. At a March 12 meeting between the government leader and representatives from key private economic groups in Hanoi, PM Phuc emphasized that enterprises should be the fortresses in the pandemic battle. He applauded many corporations that have taken appropriate measures, but asked private businesses to contribute to ensuring the supply of food and essential goods to people and avoid sudden price hikes.
At the meeting, business representatives expressed their willingness to support the government’s dual task of fighting the pandemic and promoting socioeconomic development. For example, Vietjet Air launched the Emergency Committee for Covid-19 Prevention, while the Masan Group is running factories at full capacity to ensure food supplies.
To successfully fight the pandemic and stabilize the socioeconomic situation, the Vietnamese government is committed to promoting reforms and creating a better business and investment environment. In addition, the government will continue to perfect institutions and devise appropriate steps to facilitate business development, while asking enterprises to focus on the domestic market in order to ensure the supply of necessities.
