Politburo member Lich made the remark while hosting a reception for US Secretary of Defence James Mattis in Hanoi on October 17.

He applauded the US’s cooperation in the efforts to detoxify the dioxin-polluted environment in Vietnam, emphasising that the Vietnam-US collaboration on overcoming post-war aftermaths will be further accelerated in the future, including the issue of dioxin detoxification.

For his part, US Secretary of Defence James Mattis stated that he made a field trip to the dioxin-polluted environment handling area at Bien Hoa Airport, gaining a lot of information on the situation there.

The US pledges joint efforts with Vietnam to strengthen bilateral defence ties, as well as to facilitate cooperation in the fields of maritime security, humanitarian aid and disaster relief, peacekeeping operations, and addressing consequences of war, he affirmed.

Mattis stated that the results of his visit will be a foundation for the Department of Defence to report to the Government and the Congress and call for continuous assistance to Vietnam in addressing war consequences, including the handling of dioxin-polluted areas.
