SHB Da Nang made good use of their home advantage as they controlled the match, creating an array of opportunities to score.
However, on an ill-favoured day, manager Le Huynh Duc’s players failed to convert any of the chances into goals, with midfielder Minh Tam striking the cross bar and no. 1 forward Gaston Merlo missing a glorious opportunity and having a shot cleared off the line.
In a contrast of styles, Quang Nam did not play well but had the upper hand over the home side in terms of finishing.
Nine minutes after the break, Claudecir put the guests in front following a clever shot from inside the area.
Claudecir’s goal caused the Da Nang players to lose their tempers, forcing the host team to play with only nine men on the field after two red cards were shown to Gramoz and Do Merlo following their infringements in the 68th and 73rd minutes.
Losing two men, Da Nang’s defence was weakened considerably, which enabled Quang Nam to double their lead and seal the victory thanks to Claudecir’s second goal in the 76th minute.
The 2-0 victory helped Quang Nam to regain the top spot from FLC Thanh Hoa, who defeated bottom-placed Long An with a score of 2-0 a day earlier.
Reigning champions Hanoi FC suffered a sudden slip in their title race, losing 2-3 to underdogs Hoang Anh Gia Lai. The team from the capital city is now standing in third position in the table with 39 points, only ahead of Quang Ninh Coal, who edged Hai Phong 1-0, on goal difference.
Becamex Binh Duong and Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN played out respective 1-1 draws against XSKT Can Tho and Song Lam Nghe An, while Saigon claimed a 3-1 win over Ho Chi Minh City in a city derby on Sunday.
