(VEN) - The Bac Ha Fair Market in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai, about 70km from Lao Cai City, takes place on weekends and serves as a commodity exchange and sales point of 14 ethnic groups living in Bac Ha Township and surrounding districts and provinces. Traders bring to the fair many varieties of produce such as tea, fruit, honeybee, wine, brocades, silver jewelry, orchid, saplings, horses, oxen, and pigs, among other goods.
The bustling, colorful and bold atmosphere reflects the community life of the northwestern mountainous ethnic groups with their unique traditional cultural values. Men and women, mothers and girls go to the market in their colorful traditional brocade costumes, creating a unique tableau for the many domestic and foreign visitors. The market also serves as a meeting point for residents of remote villages, and even for matchmaking among the region’s young people.
