(VEN) - To overcome economic difficulties, the tourism industry has come up with urgent solutions and Deputy General Director of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Nguyen Manh Cuong was optimistic at a recent interview with Vietnam Economic News’ Hoa Quynh that the tourism industry would welcome more than 8.2 million international visitors this year.

What does the tourism industry expect in deploying the Exciting Vietnam, a Safe, Attractive, and Friendly Destination campaign?

This is a short campaign aimed to reaffirm Vietnam’s position as a tourism destination in the world travel map, including specific activities such as international press conferences, attractive tourist destination surveys, tourism product building via promoting domestic and foreign corporate links, and promotion of Vietnam’s image to the world.

How about the national tourism promotion funding?

The national tourism promotion funds have been limited; however, the situation will improve in August as the government will issue a new resolution on tourism development, with focus on strengthening the national tourism promotion. I.e. the sector is allowed to use a part of the tourism revenue in addition to funding from the state budget to promote tourism.

What about simplifying entry procedures, for example, the proposed visa exemption for some more markets?

The European Union (EU), Japan and some countries in the region have also eased visa regulations and gradually towards visa exemption for Vietnamese tourists. Especially by 2015, when the ASEAN Economic Community is established, Vietnam’s tourism development will probably be further facilitated. Therefore, Vietnam needs to continue to simplify entry procedures, apply preferential regimes for seven distinct markets, consider expanding the list of countries exempt from visa application, implement electronic visa (E-visa), and fully participate in the common visa arrangements within the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) frameworks.

The Government has assigned the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to consider proposals for visa exemptions for some more markets in order to ensure the mutual interests.

What solutions will the tourism industry apply to attract visitors?

In order to proactively respond to the new situation, the State Steering Committee on Tourism agreed to deploy a number of urgent measures to promote Vietnam as a safe, attractive, and friendly destination, especially in some key markets, in order to successfully implement the annual plan.

Vietnam has great attraction for international tourists thanks to potential advantages of scenery, culture, and history. However, tourism products and services and the environment should be improved, and the sector should focus more on meeting the needs of visitors.

Is it possible for the tourism industry to hit the annual targets of welcoming 8.2 million international tourists and generating a revenue of VND240 billion?

The tourism industry is implementing a series of measures to attract tourists, including travel fairs and road shows, along with positive deployment of bilateral and multilateral tourism commitments and cooperation agreements. I believe that the sector will hit the annual targets with the assistance from the government and related agencies and ministries./.
