1. Prime Minister met amateur inventors and young scientists

The Ministry of Science and Technology held two meetings for outstanding amateur scientists and young scientists of 2015 on May 12 and September 11 respectively, which confirmed the special attention of the party and state leadership to amateur inventors and young scientists and were considered as opportunities for scientists to highlight their results and make recommendations on scientific development mechanisms and policies.

2. Techfest Vietnam 2015

The Ministry of Science and Technology held Techfest Vietnam 2015 at the Vietnam National University from May 15-17, which attracted more than 1,000 participants including managers, scientists, business starters, investors and business incubators and triggered a series of conferences to connect start-up businesses in the country with domestic and international investors.

3. Technology Transfer and Assessment Research Center inaugurated

The Hanoi’s People’s Committee inaugurated the largest national Technology Transfer and Assessment Research Center at the Hoa Lac High-tech Park on October 29, which has attracted 200 scientists to study and promote international co-operation.

4. International scientific conference on great poet Nguyen Du

The 250th birthday of Nguyen Du was marked on August 8 in Hanoi. He is famous for writing the epic poem The Tale of Kieu. The event was intended to promote Vietnam’s literary tradition to international friends.

5. UNESCO recognized Vietnam’s mathematics and physics centers

The two centers have been recognized and patronized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since November in the context of increasing international integration.

6. Kidney transplant completed

The Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City successfully transplanted kidneys from dead donors to two patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure on June 18. The operations were part of a project on the research and development of kidney transplantation from dead donors headed by Assoc. Prof. and Dr. Nguyen Truong Son. The success gives hope to thousands of patients with kidney diseases.

7. Prefab structures for lake, river and sea protection developed

This prefabricated technology solution was invented by the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Urban Sewerage and Development Co. Ltd and has been praised locally and internationally for reducing construction periods by two-thirds and construction costs by at least 20 percent compared to traditional alternatives.

8. Successful new weapon tests

A Ministry of Defense-level Project implemented by the General Department of Defense Industry has successfully designed, manufactured and tested new weapons systems which were praised for their high-quality and suitability for local combat conditions.

9. Vietnam as one of the top three ASEAN countries in 2015 global innovation index

According to the 2015 global innovation index co-announced by the World Intellectual Property Organization, US-based Cornell University and France-based INSEAD Business School, Vietnam jumped 19 places from 2014 to rank 52nd among 141 economies, a result  viewed as a major success for Vietnam’s science and technology sector.

10. First Vietnamese woman wins L’Oreal-UNESCO award

Dr. Tran Ha Lien Phuong from the Ho Chi Minh City-based Vietnam National University became the first Vietnamese female scientist to achieve the L’Oreal-UNESCO International Rising Talent award at a ceremony held in the French capital of Paris on March 18 for her effective low-cost cancer treatment method.
