Good news came to the Vietnamese sports delegation on the evening of August 27 as track and field athlete Bui Thi Thu Thao brought the second gold medal for Vietnam at the ongoing Asian Games 2018 (Asiad 18) in Indonesia.

Thao obtained the gold in the women’s long jump with the achievement of 6.55m in her first attempt. This is also the first gold medal won by Vietnamese track and field athletes at Asiad.

After the golden hopes of the Vietnamese track and field team failed on previous days, all the attention was given to Thao, who is currently the Asian champion in the women's long jump with 6.54m achieved last year. And the 1992 born did not disappoint the home fans.

At the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium late Sunday, Thao made a superb jump of 6.55m right in her first attempt. The result of 6.52m in her fifth is even better than the Indian silver medalist Neena Varakil, who jumped 6.51m. Bronze medal went to Chinese athlete, Xu Xiaoling with 6.50m.

Thao’s teammate Nguyen Thi Truc Mai only ranked No. 8 with her best performance 6.19 m after six attempts.

The result helps Thao successfully change the medal colour at Asiad after winning the silver in the previous Games in 2014, with a 6.44m achievement, although it is far below the 6.68m when Thao won gold at the regional 2017 Southeast Asian Games.

The Vietnamese sport delegation now jumped to the 20th in the medal tally, winning a total of two gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze medals.
