(VEN) - With a volume of nearly 18,000 tonnes of plastic garbage generated a day and 1.8 million tonnes discharged into oceans a year, Vietnam is one of the world’s top five ocean plastic polluters. The management of plastic waste on land to limit the discharge into the oceans under an official action plan adopted six months ago is confronting Vietnam with a major challenge.

Innovation Challenge launched to tackle plastic pollution in ASEAN

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), together with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), on June 24 launched an ASEAN-wide innovation challenge to deal with plastic waste in Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay and Thailand’s Koh Samui (Samui Island) in 2020, followed by Indonesia and the Philippines in 2021.
