Road to “sustainable green brand”

(VEN) - Through consistent investment in environmental protection with a large scale wastewater treatment system and clean power operation zones, Ninh Binh Thermal Power Joint Stock Company has distinguished itself through its commitment to environmentally-friendly practices.

Deputy Director of Ninh Binh Thermal Power JSC Tong Duc Chinh said from a seriously polluted plant, with the support from the Vietnam Electricity Group, Ninh Binh Thermal Power Plant has now become a leader in environmental protection.

Back in 1995, Ninh Binh Thermal Power Plant was notorious for its pollution. Realizing that this could not continue, the board of directors began to address the plant’s shortcomings in order to lay out a strategy for the company’s sustainable development.

From this awareness, the Ninh Binh Thermal Power JSC actively worked on solutions and submitted their environmental reform plans to higher agencies. The plans were quickly approved with a determination to help the plant maintain operation and ensure its role in the national grid system.

During the 1996-1999 period, the company spent VND70 billion on restoring and upgrading all of the plant’s equipment. From 1998 to early 2000, it treated emission pollution with total investment capital of VND52 billion and from November 2001 to February 2002 it spent VND942 million on upgrading internal road . The company also coordinated with the Energy Institute to apply a high-density UD powder coal firing system for all four furnaces worth nearly VND9 billion.

In addition, the Ninh Binh Thermal Power JSC funded the upgrading of its production premises, grew more green trees and grass cover and improved water drainage systems, contributing to improving the workplace environment.

The environment achievements of the Ninh Binh Thermal Power JSC include:

The excellent role model flag for the “Green-Clean-Beautiful” movement and Occupational Safety and Health in 2007 rewarded by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor; the Sustainable Green Brand Award in 2008 and 2009 of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA); the Golden Cup “for the cause of Vietnamese environmental protection” from VUSTA in 2008.

After completing environment projects, the Ninh Binh Thermal Power JSC upgraded and restored all equipment of the plant annually according to regulations of manufacturers and EVN. Consequently, production activities of the company became more stable and efficient producing  663,136,624 kWh in power in 2011 to  and 605,310,821 kWh last year.

Tong Duc Chinh said at the plant’s four turbines are capable of generating up to 100 MW. However, to ensure safe operation of the turbines and promote the output of the electrostatic dust filter system, the company has planned to replace new high frequency transformers for the electrostatic dust filters. He stressed “in the coming time, the company will continue to invest in production facilities for efficient business activities as well as for a sustainable environment in the plant./.
