(VEN) - Quang Ninh Province, Ho Chi Minh City and five northern provinces recently signed a tourism cooperation and development agreement, with the aim of achieving a 2.5 percent annual increase in the number of tourists.
Quang Ninh is moving towards becoming one of the country’s key international tourist centers
According to Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh Province People’s Committee Le Quang Tung, Quang Ninh’s tourism sector has prospered in recent years thanks to promoting the province as an international tourist destination and its implementation of three breakthroughs, including switching to green economic development models, preparing a socioeconomic development master plan and promoting administrative reform. “However, the sector has failed to develop in commensuration with the local potential, contributed less to the provincial budget, and failed to promote regional, sectoral and local tourism links,” he added.
Quang Ninh annually welcomes more than seven million visitors including about five million domestic tourists, but only about seven percent of which come from southern provinces, particularly Ho Chi Minh City. The cause for this was alleged to poor tourism links promotion by the province and substandard tourism services.
Recognizing this, Quang Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City and five northern provinces including Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen and Lang Son have decided to promote tourism links, with Quang Ninh playing a key role in promoting tourism links with Ho Chi Minh City. The links are expected to open up opportunities for promoting two-way exchange of tourists between related provinces and cities.
Quang Ninh regards the agreement as a key element in its domestic tourism market development strategy in the coming years. In addition, Quang Ninh’s tourism sector will also have access to advanced professional tourism management methods being applied by travel companies in Ho Chi Minh City in order to quickly improve its services, become a major spearhead economic sector and contribute more to the provincial socioeconomic development. It expects to record 10.5 million tourists by 2020, including four million international visitors.
General Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Nguyen Van Tuan said, “Regional tourism development links have become an inevitable trend in the national tourism development strategy. Quang Ninh has proposed a new tourism development model with a focus on promoting tourism development links at local, sub-regional and regional levels.”
The links should be strengthened via messages, slogans, and joint actions to achieve practical and key results, and should need close coordination of related authorities and positive corporate participations. Each locality should have key tourist products, attractive destinations, good tourism infrastructure services, and security, and the responsibility to participate in joint tourism promotional activities.
Director of the Travel Department under the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Nguyen Quy Phuong said, “To make the most of the appeal of local tourism markets, Quang Ninh’s tourism sector needs to focus on developing unique tourism products of its own, for example, tourism products based on provincial natural resources in Binh Lieu and Hoanh Bo districts.”
