(VEN) - Over the past decade, the application of atomic energy for the domestic socioeconomic development has been boosted and resulted in remarkable achievements in the health, industrial and agricultural sectors which have been appreciated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Awarding certificates of merit to units with outstanding contributions to the research and application of atomic energy in the 2006-2015 period
According to Director General of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Agency Hoang Anh Tuan, Vietnam has achieved outstanding results in the research and application of nuclear energy for the domestic socioeconomic development during the 2006-2015 period with a vision towards 2020. The application of atomic energy has been extended to various sectors including health, industry, agriculture, metrology, mining and environmental protection.
In the health sector, for example, most district hospitals have X-ray machines while provincial hospitals have computerized tomography (CT) scanners. Vietnam has more than 30 nuclear medicine facilities in operation, with 31 single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scanners.
In terms of agriculture, Vietnam has created more than 50 varieties of crops thanks to the application of irradiation mutagenesis, including rice, soya and pomelo. Vietnam is ranked 8th in the world in the field of research on mutation breeding according to the AEA.
In terms of industry, Vietnam has manufactured and successfully piloted measuring equipment in the coal industry, equipment for rapid analysis in the cement industry and for early warning environmental radioactivity monitoring and industrial X-ray machines.
In addition, the radiation technology has been successfully applied by the Research and Development Center for Radiation Technology under the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute and the An Phu Irradiation JSC, with revenues from applications of radiation technology amounted to hundreds of billions of dong every year. This technology is largely applied in pasteurizing food and foodstuffs, sterilizing medical tools and manufacturing salinity and high-temperature resistant and water-soluble polymer composition serving the petroleum industry.
New era for atomic energy application
In its strategy for peaceful uses of nuclear energy until 2020, Vietnam aims to continue atomic energy application in a safe and effective manner in different socioeconomic sectors, especially health, agriculture and industry. The country is also working on a project to construct its first nuclear power plant.
According to Nguyen Cuong Lam, Deputy General Director of the Vietnam Electricity and Head of the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Plant Project Management, the feasibility study of the Ninh Thuan 1 Nuclear Power Plant was submitted to the government in September 2015 and is expected to be approved by March 2016, while the feasibility study for the Ninh Thuan 2 Nuclear Power Plant is under preparation for submission by 2016.
Vietnam will continue to issue atomic energy policies in an effort to establish a legal framework for international atomic energy cooperation, along with exploiting local atomic energy potential.
