(VEN) - The Ministry of Industry and Trade has strengthened coordination with other ministries and agencies to promote online trading in order to pave the way for longan exports.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has cooperated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to hold an international online trading conference for Vietnamese fresh longan and its products. The mid-August webinar from Hanoi attracted about 100 firms from eight markets, such as India, Australia, the Republic of Korea and China, and more than 30 Vietnamese growers, cooperatives and businesses.
Vu Ba Phu, director of the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency, said Chinese traders usually come to the gardens to buy Vietnamese longan. In previous years, 70 percent of Vietnam’s longan output was exported to China. However, the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic has limited travel, necessitating other ways to promote longan exports. Online trading has proven efficient in that regard.
The Chinese Embassy in Vietnam says it has coordinated with the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade to facilitate Vietnam’s exports of longan in particular and agricultural products in general to the Chinese market. The embassy has also asked Chinese firms to contact Vietnamese exporters to promote trade between the two sides.
Vietnamese businesses and cooperatives should improve their processing and packaging capacity, while localities should cultivate high-quality growing areas in order to help Vietnamese longan compete with foreign grown fruit.
Vietnam should also apply biotechnology to diversify longan products in order to meet diverse consumer needs.
According to statistics, the provinces of Hung Yen and Son La have to date produced 100 and 800 tonnes of longan products, respectively, including canned longan juice. Bui The Cu, deputy chairman of the Hung Yen People’s Committee, said Hung Yen Province is committed to strengthening connections between Vietnamese growers, cooperatives and businesses and Chinese and foreign traders in order to bring longan products to the world. The province will also coordinate with transport and logistics businesses to ensure the fastest delivery time at the lowest cost.
Hung Yen Province has signed an agreement to export over two tonnes of longan products and several
tonnes of fresh longan to Australia.
