The plant, the largest of its kind in the Northwest, is invested with over VND81.2 billion (US$3.5 million) including VND66.3 billion lent from AFD and VND14.9 billion from the provincial budget.

The plant covers an area of 30ha and has a capacity of treating 100 to 147 tonnes of waste per day.

This is the first large scale environmental project in Lao Cai to handle domestic waste collected from Lao Cai city and Bat Xat and Sapa towns. Waste will be classified, recycled and processed into organic and mineral fertilizers to serve agricultural production and protect the environment.

The plant is part of the project on improving rural and tourism infrastructure in Lao Cai approved by the provincial People's Committee in 2007./.
