Under the title “Exploring the southern land,” the National Tourism Year 2016 was kicked off on April 10 in Phu Quoc island district, Kien Giang province.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the Tourism Year, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam emphasized that tourism not only relates to landscape and culture but also to convenient infrastructure that makes tourists satisfactory.
Mr. Dam noted the importance of creating a favorable environment for tourism infrastructure development besides taking advantages of beautiful landscapes.
In the 2000s, Phu Quoc welcomed around 100,000 tourists. The number of visitors to the island increased constantly to over 620,000 in 2013; over 1 million in 2014; and 1.637 million in 2015, bringing in a turnover of nearly US$100 million.
However, the Deputy PM proposed the local tourism sector focus on tackling shortcomings like entry and exit procedures, accommodation, investment, and business with a view to paving the most favorable way for tourists and tourism investors.
Kien Giang is home to many popular tourist sites such as U Minh Thuong National Park, the Giant Buddha Pagoda and Phu Quoc Island./.
