(VEN) - The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recently announced a national action program to preserve and promote the worship of Mother Goddesses in Vietnam and its ritual, which has been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.

The value of cultural creativity

The worship of Mother Goddesses and its attendant rituals are a distinct form of Vietnamese folk religion, giving prominence to mother goddesses in its pantheon. Basic practices of the heritage include the Mother Goddesses worship ritual and festivals, notably the Phu Day Festival held in Kim Thai Village of Nam Dinh Province’s Vu Ban District from the 3rd to the 10th day of the third lunar month. The ritual and festivals include rites, performances of folk songs, and dances, among others.

The Mother Goddesses worship ritual and festivals contribute to preserving the history, heritage and cultural identities of Vietnamese people, and to dignifying the role of women in the family and society.

Promoting heritage values

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced a national action program to preserve and promote the worship of Mother Goddesses in Vietnam and is encouraging authorities and communities to join the program. The ministry has also suggested further identification, research and documentation of traditional rituals and festivals associated with the heritage, as well as promotion of communication and education to raise public awareness of the heritage’s special values and role.

Under the program, the ministry encourages Chau Van (a traditional folk art of northern Vietnam, which combines trance singing and dancing) artists to teach young people to perform the art, while promoting education of the art in schools and strengthening state management to preserve and bring into play the heritage’s values.

It also calls on localities to work with media agencies and relevant associations to prepare programs for introducing the heritage to domestic and foreign communities.

Deputy Minister of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Nguyen Thi Bich Lien, said the ministry will direct and cooperate with localities related to the heritage to carry out the national action program for preservation and promotion of the Mother Goddesses worship and its ritual. The ministry will also tell Nam Dinh and other provinces related to the heritage to prepare detailed plans for implementation of the program in the 2017-2020 period.
