(VEN) - On July 10, the PetroVietnam Song Hau 1 Power Project Management Board, together with contractors VINAINCON, LILAMA and member units of Vietnam Electricity (EVN), successfully powered up key components of the long-delayed Mekong Delta power plant toward its 2021 completion.

The latest phase involved energizing the 500kV Song Hau-Duc Hoa transmission line phase 1; the 500kV distribution yard in Song Hau Power Center and the main transformer of Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant. The estimated US$2 billion power plant is located in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang.
Ho Xuan Hien, Head of the Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Project Management Board, said that the successful energizing of these electricity works plays a very important role in the testing plan of the plant, which is due to replace the local power grid’s overloaded 22kV power source that has been interrupting testing operations.
The 500kV power source supply will meet the testing needs of large capacity loads at the Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant, currently at its sprint stage.
The energizing completion was a prerequisite for piloting important equipment, such as air-blast for furnaces and cooling water-pumping systems. This is also a prerequisite to ensure firing up generating unit 1 by the end of July 2020 and putting all units into operation in 2021 as assigned by the prime minister.
The project, initially begun in 2010, has been delayed repeatedly by funding shortfalls and delays in building the 120 km-long Hau River-Duc Hoa 500kV transmission line to carry power from the plant.
With a capacity of 1,200MW, once operational, the Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant will supply the national grid with 7.8 billion kWh per year, contributing to national energy security and economic development of the Mekong River Delta.
According to Ho Xuan Hien, completion of the energizing phase was facilitated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, leaders of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN), the National Steering Committee for Power Development, and constant coordination between EVN and PVN at all levels.
Regarding overall progress of the project, Hien said the PetroVietnam Song Hau 1 Power Project Management Board and contractor LILAMA are mobilizing resources to speed up work in order to put into operation generating unit 1 and unit 2 by the second and third quarter of 2021, respectively, in accordance with Government Resolution 69/NQ-CP of September 2019.
So far, 84.52 percent of the total workload and overall progress of the project has been completed, with design reaching 99.75 percent; equipment procurement and manufacturing 99.78 percent; construction about 88.94 percent and test runs 17.9 percent.
As for key plans and tasks of the last six months of 2020, the project’s management board has set out two important goals: firing up Unit 1 in July 2020 with diesel oil and using coal in October 2020.
