(VEN) - In addition to strengthening registration and protection of geographical indication for Buon Ma Thuot coffee abroad, the Dak Lak Province People’s Committee is paying special attention to sustainable production and improving product quality.
Increasing export value
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Department of Crop Production, Dak Lak Province is set to replant coffee on 4,423ha in 2015 and 3,497ha in 2016, bringing the total replanted area to about 27,811ha by 2020. New coffee varieties such as TR4, TR12 and TR13 with high productivity of 4.2-7.6 tonnes per ha will be put into production, contributing to improving competitiveness on the world market.
“The Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development signed a memorandum of understanding to provide VND3 trillion for coffee growing and replanting projects,” a Department of Crop Production representative said.
According to the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association, some households and businesses have actively applied the 4C, UTZ Certified and Rain international standards in order to promote sustainable production. The 4C coffee accounted for nearly 40 percent of the province’s cultivation area and 60 percent of output, respectively. In particular, provincial businesses have paid attention to upgrading machinery and equipment to improve quality and persify products. Wet and semi-washed coffee processing systems have been applied at the Thang Loi, Thang 10 and Phuoc An coffee companies.
Thang Loi Coffee Company Director Nguyen Xuan Thai said that thanks to investing into coffee production lines, the company has achieved better quality.
Together with a cultivation area of nearly 203,000ha, Dak Lak Province’s coffee export turnover has reached US$600-650 million a year. Buon Ma Thuot coffee has proved its efficiency thanks to brand and geographical indication certificates.
Paying for brand protection
Registration and protection of geographical indication for Buon Ma Thuot coffee is seen as an important way to improve the export value. Dak Lak Province currently has 10 coffee production and trade companies who have been allowed to use geographical indication for Buon Ma Thuot coffee.
The Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association is promoting registration and protection of geographical indication for Buon Ma Thuot coffee abroad. The association has submitted the registration form in 15 countries, including Germany, Spain, the UK, the US and Russia, with Germany, Spain and the Benelux countries agreeing on protection of geographical indication for Buon Ma Thuot coffee.
The association is also strengthening trade promotion activities, branding and market expansion.
