(VEN) - In the first half of 2021, Covid-19 significantly affected the production and business activities of the Lao Cai Copper Smelting Company under the Vinacomin - Minerals Holding Corporation (Vimico). However, the solidarity and efforts of officials and employees helped the company complete its production and business plans, ensuring labor safety and environmental protection.

Over 50 percent of plans completed

According to the Lao Cai Copper Smelting Company’s leadership, production and sale revenues achieved over 50 percent of the set plans in the first half of this year. Specifically, the output of cathode copper product reached 6,508 tonnes, exceeding the plan by 50.07 percent, while that of sulfuric acid was 22,679 tonnes, exceeding the plan by 53.79 percent; gold ingots yielded 298.52kg, equivalent to 49.52 percent while silver ingots at 267.40kg, or 49.30 percent of the year’s plan. Revenues during this period reached over VND1 trillion, exceeding the plan by 51.56 percent.

To achieve safe and efficient production and business targets in 2021, the company has proposed many solutions in management and operations, such as improving the quality of repair and maintenance work. As a result, the company gradually improved the operational efficiency of production line equipment, enabling continuous operations, especially of the smelting line.

The company also increased the productivity of slag treatment to improve smelting efficiency. The productivity of copper anode at the smelting line has been raised from 48 tonnes to over 50 tonnes a day. It also deployed a lean made-in-Vietnam administration method, improving employee awareness of their work.

In addition to ensuring stability of production and business activities despite the pandemic, the Lao Cai Copper Smelting Company also paid special attention to occupational safety and health (OSH) and environmental protection.

Reward for OSH performance

On May 10, 2021, the company held a launch ceremony of the “Worker's Month - Month of Action on OSH”.

The event was aimed at encouraging employees to adhere to safety standards in production and join hands with the company and the government to effectively prevent the pandemic. It was also meant to encourage union members to express their feelings and wishes to enable prompt problem solutions in the labor relationship in order to successfully complete the company’s tasks.

The company has deducted a part of the trade union funding to support workers directly, and visit workers who were sick or involved in occupational accidents.

The company's OSH council was assigned to inspect OSH and environmental protection periodically and irregularly at workshops, and advise and propose solutions to improve working conditions.

In addition, the company held a meeting to review implementation of the Joint Resolution on OSH in the first quarter and second quarter of 2021, finding that production and business safety was secured without equipment breakdowns and occupational accidents. Consequently, the company encouraged and rewarded related departments with over VND60 million for their good OSH performance.

Regarding environmental tasks, the company has spent VND1.176 billion to plant trees and treat waste.

In the first six months of the year, the company carried out two OSH periodic inspections at production workshops. It also provided full labor insurance and work station facilities for employees according to regulations.
