The opening ceremony for the annual event featured art performances by the ethnic minorities in Bac Ha, showcasing the attraction of the indigenous culture of the Mong, Dao, Tay, Nung, Giay and La Chi peoples.
A range of activities will be held during the week, including a 40 km bicycle race connecting Bac Ha and Xin Man (in Ha Giang province), with the participation of around 100 cyclists, a street festival with folk performances by the ethnic minorities in Bac Ha, a festival displaying local agricultural products at Hoang A Tuong Palace, and performances of traditional handicrafts and local cuisine. The top highlight of the week will be a traditional horse race, with hundreds of riders who are local farmers competing with their packhorses.
Nguyen Dinh Dung, Deputy Head of the Lao Cai provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that the Bac Ha Culture and Tourism Week brings a series of attractive art programs and activities of the land dubbed the "white plateau," actively contributing to promoting the highland’s tourism, crafts and culture.
The event is also an opportunity to attract resources to develop tourism and bring the image of the "white plateau" to domestic and international tourists, Dung added.
Themed "Colors of the white plateau," named after the yearly cloud surrounding Bac Ha’s nickname, the week will last until June 9.
