Secretary of the Lang Son Party Committee has been appointed chairman of the state-owned National Oil and Gas Group (PVN) nearly one year after the post was left vacant.

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc presents the decision to appoint Tran Sy Thanh as new chairman of the PVN

Thanh will also become a deputy head of the Central Economic Commission, replacing Dinh La Thang, also a former PVN chairman, who was arrested in early December on charges of intentional violation of state economic management, causing serious consequences.

The investigation into economic mismanagement at PVN has led to the arrest of several senior leaders, including former chairmen Nguyen Quoc Khanh, Nguyen Xuan Son and Phung Dinh Thuc.

Nguyen Xuan Son had been sentenced to death by the Hanoi People’s Court in September.

Tran Sy Thanh, born in 1971 in the central province of Nghe An, has a held a number of high-ranking posts including deputy director general of the State Treasury, deputy head of the Central Inspection Commission and secretary of the Bac Giang Party Committee.

He is currently a member of the National Assembly’s Finance and Budget Committee.

Thanh’s role as head of the Lang Son Party Committee will be assumed by Lam Thi Phuong Thanh, a deputy head of the Central Commission for Education and Communication.

Speaking at a conference to announce cadre appointments on December 24, head of the Central Organisation Commission Pham Minh Chinh anticipates that the two new leaders will effectively fulfil their assigned tasks.

He also expects the Lang Son Party Committee to create all conditions necessary to help the new secretary Lam Thi Phuong Thanh to put her leadership skills into use and carry out her responsibilities.
