(VEN) - The eighth Hue Traditional Craft Festival 2019, themed “The Quintessence of Vietnamese Crafts”, will take place in the historic capital city from April 26 to May 2.
Reviving traditional craft
The Hue Traditional Craft Festival has contributed to preserving and developing traditional crafts, honoring artisans, and introducing the province’s unique products to domestic and international friends.
This year’s festival will introduce unique products such as embroidery, jewelry, fine art wood, copper, green rice flakes, palm-leaf conical hats, confetti, calligraphy, paintings, kites, weaving and sewing, bamboo and rattan, enameled bronze, incense sticks, essential oils, and ornamental artificial lions and dragons. Sixty-two craft villages will also take part in the festival, as will 350 artisans from famous craft villages throughout the country such as Ha Giang, Hoa Binh, Hanoi, Thai Binh, Ha Nam, Ninh Thuan, Lam Dong, Da Lat, Dong Thap, Hung Yen and Thua Thien Hue.
At this year’s festival, participants will be treated to medical examination and treatment using the traditional medicine techniques that are Hue hallmarks, allowing traditional medicine doctors an opportunity to display their talents.
Than Van Huy from the Thanh Tien Confetti Village in Phu Vang District said fostering the revival and development of craft villages is the festival’s biggest advantage. For Thanh Tien Confetti Village this has meant exposure in many countries such as the US, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, Huy said, adding that various contracts have been signed since the village joined the festival for the first time in 2013.
In addition to confetti, many unique products have been introduced in foreign countries, such as Zeng weaving, kites, woodcarving, enameled bronze, and ao dai (Vietnamese traditional long dress).
Tran Duy Mong from the Ke Mon Jewelry Village in Phong Dien District said he has studied and created sophisticated and beautiful products to introduce to domestic and international friends.
Introducing to the world
Nguyen Van Thanh, chair of the Hue People’s Committee, said the city wants more and more foreign partners to take part in the festival. The Hue Traditional Craft Festival 2019 will host famous traditional handicrafts from countries around the world with which Hue has established relations. In addition, eight cities including Japan’s Takayama, Sasayama and Saijo, the Republic of Korea’s Gyeongju, Namyangju and Dongnae, Turkey’s Konya, and Brazil’s Sao Luix, three professional associations, businesses and 68 foreign artisans will attend the festival.
In addition to previous activities such as the ao dai festival, food festival and Hue international hot air balloon festival, there will also be new attractions such as a flower festival, arts programs and performances by Korean singers. The organization board will provide decorated spaces to honor artisans and craft villages, especially those working with lotus, silk, brocade and ao dai. Each space will not only tell a story about traditional crafts, but also introduce craft products imbued with Vietnamese tradition and suitable for international integration.
Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Deputy General Director Ngo Hoai Chung said the Hue Traditional Craft Festival has been affirming its brand and prestige in the public.
The seventh Hue Traditional Craft Festival welcomed 170,000 visitors, 70,000 of them staying in the city overnight, an
increase of 13 percent compared to the previous festival.
