(VEN) - Hanoi keeps making strenuous efforts to improve its image as a safe, friendly, quality and attractive destination for visitors, though it has become one of the two largest tourist centers in Vietnam and a top-10 tourist destination in Asia.

Developing specific tourist offerings

Possessing more than 5,000 relic sites and many famous destinations, including Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature), Duong Lam ancient village, Bat Trang pottery village, the old quarters, and more, Hanoi has become renowned for its culture-based tourist offerings.

To bring into play its cultural strengths and develop culture-related tours, Hanoi launched many tours to historical and cultural sites, while promoting investment in traditional art performance programs at the Dai Nam Theater, Thang Long Water Puppet Theater, Hanoi Cai Luong Theater, and more, and opening more pedestrian zones around Hoan Kiem Lake, which all attract domestic and foreign visitors.

The number of visitors to Hanoi recently accounted for one-third of all tourists nationwide, increasing more than 10 percent per year, with the city’s tourism revenue growing over 15 percent per annum. Experts assessed that Hanoi obtained remarkable tourist achievements, and that tourism made significant contributions to the capital’s economic development, as it contributed to economic restructuring, job creation, income improvement, promoting infrastructure development and improvement of the capital’s face.

However, experts said that what Hanoi tourism has achieved in recent years remained disproportionate with the capital’s potential. Hanoi still needs to find way to retain visitors and increase visitor’s expenditure, develop and persify tourist offerings. A foreign visitor came to Hanoi 10 years after his previous arrival said that Hanoi was almost the same as it was 10 years ago, as what visitors could find during nighttime was nothing, except dinner foods and water puppets.

Starting in September 1, on a trial basis, Hanoi allows restaurants and bars in Hoan Kiem District to be open until 2am on three weekends, while at the same time opening pedestrian zones around Hoan Kiem Lake. This has so far had positive impact on domestic and foreign visitors.

To retain visitors, Hanoi has strengthened links with key tourism provinces. It signed the ‘Three provinces and cities - one destination’ program with Quang Ninh Province and the city of Hai Phong, and the ‘Four cities - one destination’ program with the ancient capital of Hue, the city of Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City.

Improving infrastructure

Inadequate infrastructure is one of the biggest drawbacks to Hanoi tourism development. Hanoi needs many more national and international standard parks, sports areas, and entertainment, recreation and shopping centers.

Hanoi-based tourism businesses in general remain small in size and poor in competitiveness. Their activities are still spontaneous and need to be systematic. All of this deters Hanoi from deeply impressing visitors.

Hanoi Department of Tourism Director Do Dinh Hong said that Hanoi has great potential to develop tourism, especially culture-based tours, eco-tours and conference/seminar-related tours. Investment is crucial to turn the potential into specific tourist offerings. Hanoi is developing and improving its infrastructure, pertaining to national and city programs. It is looking for strategic contractors to implement tourism service development projects around West Lake, in and along the Hong (Red) River, and in the Nhat Tan - Noi Bai area, the Ba Vi - Suoi Hai National Park, and the Huong Son - Quan Lake - Tuy Lai Lake landscape. The capital will also build two to three international standard recreation centers and some featured streets, gardens and parks to attract visitors.

Through its recent Resolution 06-NQ/TU on tourism development from 2016-2020 and subsequent years, Hanoi has set many targets, a notable one of which is comprehensive, sustainable tourism development. According to this resolution, tourism will become a spearhead sector by 2020, which will grow rapidly in a professional manner and have modern, consistent infrastructure, and high quality, perse, competitive and renowned products and services. A goal is for Hanoi to welcome 30 million visitors, including 5.7 million foreign visitors, with revenue of VND120 trillion and room occupancy rate of 60-65 percent by 2020.

To accomplish this goal, Hanoi is reviewing and supplementing tourism plans, developing quality tourist offerings and brands, improving infrastructure, and training and developing human resources. The city also has incentive policies to promote tourism investment, aimed at becoming a safe, friendly, quality, and attractive tourist destination, and a leading tourist center in the country and Southeast Asia.

Hanoi Department of Tourism Director Do Dinh Hong said that Hanoi will focus on developing attractive, unique and quality tourist offerings, including cultural, spiritual, craft village, ecological and culinary tours, among others, towards sustainable growth.
