(VEN) - Hanoi has piloted allowing bars and restaurants in Hoan Kiem District to open until 2am instead of midnight on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This decision is considered a new catalyst for Hanoi’s tourism development.
Dinh Xuan Phuong, an experienced tour guide for Taiwanese tourists, said as soon as Hanoi People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung shared this information at a national conference on tourism development taken place recently in Hoi An, he received many phone calls from Taiwanese tourists. They said they were very happy to have more time to discover Hanoi at night.
Hanoi at night attracts not only foreign tourists but almost anyone coming here. At night, the city seems to have a new face that makes it look quite different from its daytime appearance. Hanoi is very noisy and busy during the day but becomes quiet and looks graceful at night, making anyone eager to contemplate its charming beauty from somewhere above the city.
Most foreign tourists visiting Hanoi like to discover various kinds of delicious food on streets such as Dao Duy Tu, Ta Hien, Ma May, and Luong Ngoc Quyen. In the past, Hanoi did not allow its restaurants, bars, and other entertainment facilities to open after midnight. This regulation sometimes required tourists to discontinue their favorite amusements at night, making them feel unhappy. Some foreign tourists even said Hanoi had nothing else to discover after dinner except water puppetry. This is one of the reasons why most foreign tourists do not want to stay long in Hanoi.
Therefore, Hanoi’s decision to allow restaurants and bars in Hoan Kiem District to open until 2am has been applauded by both domestic and foreign tourists. The decision is considered a new catalyst for tourism development. It is expected that following Hoan Kiem, Hanoi will spread this decision to other districts to serve tourists better.
However, to ensure social security and safety for tourists, Hanoi People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung required these bars and restaurants to register with the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee and make sure their sound systems do not disturb residents in surrounding areas. Bars and restaurants are strictly forbidden to sell beer, alcohol, and cigarettes to children.
Representatives of some tourism companies in Hanoi said allowing bars and restaurants to open until 2am was the right decision. In their opinion, however, security in areas surrounding these bars and restaurants needs to be tightened, and Hanoi needs to choose suitable bars and restaurants, not all, to follow this decision, otherwise it will be very difficult for the city to ensure security at night.
