Hai Phong signed three memorandums of understanding on cooperation in culture and tourism, flower growing and logistics services with Japanese partners at a workshop held in the northern port city on March 12.
Hai Phong Secretary Le Van Thanh affirmed at the event that Japan is one of Vietnam’s leading economic partners, the largest provider of official development assistance to Vietnam and the country’s fourth largest trading partner.
He added that Hai Phong has a special connection with Japan, being one of the earliest localities to welcome Japanese enterprises to explore investment opportunities in the city.
The municipal secretary emphasised that Hai Phong’s socio-economic achievements over the past 30 years have been partly contributed to by Japanese investors.
Currently Japan has 130 projects in Hai Phong with total investments at approximately US$4.14 billion, ranking first in terms of project numbers and second in terms of capital value.
The city is also hosting 500 permanent Japanese experts and welcoming thousands of others to work in the city annually on a rotating basis.
Chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vu Tien Loc valued Hai Phong’s efforts to improve the business climate, especially the city leadership’s monthly dialogue with the business community to address their concerns.
At the workshop, many questions raised by Japanese businesses were answered thoroughly and participants expressed their hope that Japan would become the largest investor in Vietnam and Hai Phong in particular over the time ahead.
*On the same day, the cherry festival was opened in Hai Phong where thousands of branches and more than 100 trees were on display.
The event was attended by Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam, special advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan Isao Iijima and representatives of Japanese companies.
