(VEN) - Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang visited Laos and Cambodia on June 12-16 for his first overseas trip after taking office. The visit left deep impressions, contributing to promoting the relationship between the three countries to new heights.

Treasuring Lao-Vietnamese relations
At a meeting between Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang and Lao Party General Secretary and President Bounnhang Vorachith, the two sides agreed on a need of implementing high-level agreements and outcomes in the 38th meeting of the intergovernmental committee on Lao-Vietnamese cooperation as well as cooperation plans between the two governments for 2016 and the Lao-Vietnamese cooperation treaty during the 2016-2020 period.
The two sides also affirmed their determination to effectively deploying protocols on defense cooperation during the 2016-2020 period in addition to a protocol on the borderline and national border markers of Vietnam and Laos and an agreement on regulations of managing the borderline and border gates on land.
Tran Dai Quang said that Vietnam would positively support the role of Laos as the 2016 ASEAN Chair and promote cooperation with Laos to successfully organize the 27th ASEAN Summit and related meetings.
Lao - Vietnamese economic cooperation has become flourishing in recent times. In addition, Vietnamese businesses have promoted investment in Laos with 258 projects for total registered capital of nearly US$5 billion focusing on hydropower, mining, transport and industrial crops.
The two sides have actively deployed cooperation agreements between the two governments and the one-stop-shop customs model at the Lao Bao-Densavan International Border Gate in order to strengthen connectivity and facilitate businesses.
Cooperation in numerous fields was also mentioned at a meeting such as education and training, human resource development. Vietnam has 425 students studying in Laos, while 9,295 Lao students have lessons in Vietnam. On the occasion of the visit, Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang presented Sekong Province of Laos a school worth US$1 million, contributing to promoting the province’s educational development.
Promoting Cambodian-Vietnamese comprehensive cooperation
Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang’s visit to Cambodia at the invitation of Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni affirmed determination to consolidating and promoting traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries. In addition to political cooperation, the visit also showed desires to further promote economic cooperation between the two sides, bringing bilateral trade turnover to US$5 billion in the coming time.
As two neighbors with more than 1,000km of the borderline spreading over 10 Vietnamese and nine Cambodian provinces, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries has strongly developed in recent years. Vietnam is Cambodia’s third largest trade partner and ranks fifth among foreign investors investing in Cambodia.
Cross-border trade has recorded constant growth. The number of people, vehicles and goods via border gates between the two countries has gradually increased year by year, contributing to bringing positive impacts. Trade turnover between the two countries in the first quarter of this year reached US$944.6 million, an increase of 4.3 percent compared to a year ago. Cambodia is Vietnam’s 16th largest export market through the main items being steel, fertilizer, garments and textiles, machinery and spare parts, and plastics.
Vietnam has also promoted investment in Cambodia with 183 projects for total registered capital of US$2.85 billion spreading over 16 cities and provinces focusing on agriculture and forestry, energy, finance and banking, insurance, post and telecommunication, manufacturing and processing industry, transport and storage, health and construction.
Regarding tourism, around one million of Vietnamese guests visited Cambodia in 2015, while Cambodian visitors to Vietnam reached nearly 210,000.
At a meeting with Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni, Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang said that Vietnam has attached much importance to consolidating and promoting traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.
The two sides also agreed on organizing activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vietnamese-Cambodian diplomatic ties in 2017, contributing to raising the relationship between the two countries to new heights.
