Construction and development
March 29, 1975 was seen as a significant historical event, marking Da Nang’s Liberation Day. Forty years later, Da Nang has recorded a strong growth, becoming a leading city in the central region. In particular, in the 18 years since becoming a city, Da Nang has adopted bold mechanisms and policies serving socioeconomic development.
After becoming an administrative unit directly under the central government, thanks to determination, consensus and aspiration, Da Nang has achieved remarkable results. The city’s economic growth has remained high over the years, while economic structure has shifted towards a positive. In addition, the investment environment and provincial competitiveness have been improved continuously.
One of the greatest successes for Da Nang is promoting investment activities, synchronizing infrastructure and gradually improving the investment environment. Many commercial, cultural, educational, health, transport, urban infrastructure and resettlement projects have been completed and put into operation in order to serve socioeconomic development needs.
Da Nang has focused on attracting domestic and foreign investment capital. In particular, the city has deployed a one-door mechanism in granting business registration certificates, tax identification numbers and the company seals or stamps. In addition, the city has attempted to address social issues through the success of key programs.
Da Nang Party Deputy Secretary and Da Nang People’s Committee Chairman Huynh Duc Tho said that in a context where the global and domestic economic situation has faced difficulties, Da Nang has achieved remarkable results thanks to the efforts of the authorities, unions, the business community and the public.
Almost all socioeconomic development targets were completed in 2014. The provincial gross domestic product (GDP) in 2014 increased by 9.28 percent compared to 2013, reaching an estimated VND41.714 trillion.
Da Nang has made greater efforts to complete socioeconomic development targets in 2015. In the first six months of the year, the provincial GDP increased by 8.2 percent compared to a year ago, reaching VND22.914 trillion, equal to 50 percent of the yearly plan. The industrial production index increased by 11.09 percent, while total retail sales of goods and services reached VND36.67 trillion, a year-on-year increase of 10.2 percent. In addition, total trade turnover stood at US$535 million, an increase of 10.7 percent compared to a year ago. Da Nang was praised thanks to such achievements.
Big goals for the new period
Thanks to the ongoing efforts, bold decisions as well as a consensus between city leaders and local people on developing the city, Da Nang has achieved remarkable results in socioeconomic development.
Huynh Duc Tho said that Da Nang will devise economic development solutions associated with social and environmental issues in order to ensure sustainable development. Maintaining economic growth and shifting economic structure towards a positive are necessary. The city will also focus on implementing five main tasks, including expanding tourism, trade and logistics, developing high-tech industry, information technology and biotechnology, constructing modern infrastructure, building a healthy cultural environment and developing high-quality human resources.
Da Nang will promote the implementation of the project on developing services by 2020 to make the most of tourism advantages, strengthen investment attraction from Japan, the US and the Republic of Korea, accelerate infrastructure construction in hi-tech parks to attract investment in high added-value sectors and complete the program on new rural area construction in 2015.
Improving the investment environment, enhancing service quality, promoting administrative reform, raising domestic and foreign capital serving socioeconomic development targets, reducing public investment, increasing social investment and strengthening the efficiency of capital use are mentioned as necessary.
The city will also maximize the resources and advantages in terms of marine economy, promote links with external markets to create a new growth engine, effectively implement social security issues, develop health, culture, education and training, science and technology and reduce poverty towards stronger and more sustainable development.
Da Nang aims at 9-10 percent growth in gross domestic product (GDP), 12-13 percent in export turnover and 5-10 percent in state budget revenues compared to estimates in 2015. It expects to invest VND35 trillion in total development capital, while creating 31,500 jobs this year.
