(VEN) - The first meeting of the Vietnam-Italy Joint Economic Cooperation Committee has successfully concluded, as was announced at a recent press conference in Hanoi by the Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Quoc Khanh. He said that many important decisions were agreed upon between the two parties at the meeting. (VEN) - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established on August 8, 1967 by five founding members - Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei (joined in 1984), Vietnam (1995), Laos (1997), Myanmar (1997) and Cambodia (1999) subsequently joined to make up the current 10 member states. A common misconception is that ASEAN is similar to the EU. It is not, and neither is it trying to be. ASEAN works by consensus – the ASEAN way. ASEAN’s aim is to become more integrated as a single market. A major initiative towards this goal is the ASEAN Economic Community, targeted for completion in 2015.
