(VEN) - On November 13-14, a new model on doing exercises combined with protecting lake environments was launched for the first time in Hanoi with participation of the People's Committee of Thanh Nhan and Ngoc Khanh communes, the veteran’s organization and inhabitants of the communes who live around Thanh Nhan and Ngoc Khanh lakes.

The model on doing exercises combined with protecting lake environments is attracting interest of a large number of Hanoi’s residents

According to Hanoi’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, this is a new model originating from the real demand of the community to improve health and awareness on environmental protection of Hanoi lakes.

To implement this pilot model, Hanoi’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment coordinated with the Institute of Water Resources and Environment, people's committees and veteran’s organizations of Thanh Nhan and Ngoc Khanh communes conducted surveys and installed at each lake an exercise machine (including tools to make movements by hands and feet) and a filter-bed. The exercise machine is integrated with a pump to pump lake water into the filter-bed. When exercisers use the machine, their movements will run the pump.

The aim of this model is to create an integrated tool to meet two demand of the community. The first one is to create a clean, green and nice environment around the lakes and the second is the demand for practicing sports. Participants in this model can both improve their health and directly treat the quality of the lake water and at the same time save energy or energy costs to pump lake water into the treatment systems. The new model contributes to improving the awareness of people living and working by the lakes of environmental protection tasks and raising their responsibilities to change behaviors and bad habits that could affect the lake environment.

According to Deputy Director of Hanoi’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment Pham Van Khanh, this is a good model which can both help people improve their health and improve the quality of the lake water. Through this model, the people’s awareness of lake environmental protection in particular and of environmental protection in general is also raised. The model is expected to be expanded to other lakes in the city, contributing to creating a clean, green, beautiful and sustainable image for the city.

To help this new model get high efficiency, the veteran’s organizations of Thanh Nhan and Ngoc Khanh communes are responsible for advertising, instructing, managing and protecting the equipment. The new model is attracting interests of a large number of Hanoi’s residents.

Nguyen Ngoc Ha from Ngoc Khanh Commune said “we absolutely back the model on doing exercises combined with lake environment protection. It not only creates good conditions for people to do exercises and improve their health but this is also a commitment and responsibility of each citizen in environmental protection of the city.

As for Duong Huyen Trang from Thanh Nhan Commune, she said: “I strongly support this model and I think a lot of people share the same view with me. It has been five years since the historical floods of 2008 but I can not forget it. The long heavy rains caused the whole city look like being submerged in the sea water. One of the reasons of the flood were shrinking lakes as well as the seriously polluted environment in these lakes while the awareness of the important role of the lakes had not been appreciated yet. Therefore, this exercise model has made a good influence on the people’s awareness.”/.
