(VEN) - Cat Hai Island District annually holds a fishing village festival on March 31 in Cat Ba to celebrate the day Uncle Ho visited its fishing villages on April 1, 1959.
The Cat Ba Fishing Village Festival
The event enlivens the district with flags and flowers and often attracts a lot of domestic and international tourists.
Fishing villages in Cat Hai Island District have made it a custom to hold a ceremony to see off fishermen, to release breeding fish and launch a local movement to protect and develop fisheries resources on March 30 on Cat Ba Island. The ceremony includes praying for a year of good rain and wind and effective fishing and breeding seasons. Numerous officials and locals attend the ceremony, especially fishermen and their family members.
The most attractive activity of the festival is the dragon boat racing on the sea between Cat Ba boat racers and their counterparts from Quang Ninh and Hai Phong’s Vinh Bao, Tien Lang and Thuy Nguyen districts. The races are 4km long for female racers and 6km long for male racers and regularly are completed within 30 minutes.
In addition to the dragon boat races, there are also a variety of races as part of the festival including surfing, coracle racing, tug of war and dragon dances on the sea. Local participants often do well in the tug of war at sea.
Cat Ba is illuminated in shimmering lights and colorful fireworks with modern stage lighting used during the festival. Special annually themed art programs to praise the party’s and Uncle Ho’s contributions and love of sea and islands feature the participation of many famous artists from all corners of the country.
The traditional fishing village festival has contributed to attracting domestic and foreign visitors to Cat Ba Island, which is recognized as a world biosphere reserve and an attractive destination.
