Can Tho builds up typical tourism products

Eco-tours attract most visitors to Can Tho

Located in the center of the Mekong Delta, Can Tho is rich in land and water resources, which offer favorable conditions for the city to develop tourism, especially eco-tourism. Recently, the city has paid great attention to upgrading tourism infrastructure and services, with the aim to become an attractive tourist destination in the region.

Can Tho currently has 226 tourist accommodation facilities, a lot of restaurants and meeting halls with total capacity of more than 1,000 seats. Many of these facilities are well-equipped and can be used to serve national and international events. Examples include the four-star Victoria Can Tho Resort - a French architecture styled resort by the Hau River, one of the most luxurious resorts in the city, and the five-star Muong Thanh Hotel. The city’s tourism image has shown positive changes thanks to its efforts to create typical products and tourism promotion activities. Last year, Can Tho welcomed more than 1.6 million residential visitors, equal to 118 percent of the annual plan and up 18 percent compared with 2014; revenue from tourism services reached more than VND1.74 trillion, equal to 140 percent of the annual plan and up 49 percent compared with 2014.

According to Can Tho City Culture, Sports and Tourism Department Director Tran Viet Phuong, the city has adjusted its master plan for tourism development until 2020 with a vision towards 2030. Can Tho is concentrating on developing the region’s typical tourism products to attract visitors, especially foreign tourists, for example MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) tourism, ecotourism, tours to cultural and historical sites, traditional craft villages, and home stays. The city has actively supported its districts to build up their own typical tourism products to utilize their resources. Great attention has been paid to developing waterway tourism along with tours to cultural and historical sites, traditional craft villages, and festivals. The Hau River Farm and the Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute can attract visitors who want to learn about agricultural activities.

Hopefully, the achieved results and its orientation for tourism development will turn Can Tho into one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Mekong Delta.
