Can Giuoc district in the Mekong Delta province of Long An on April 24 received funding from donors for the construction of rural bridges and houses of gratitude, as well as scholarships for disadvantaged students in local schools.

Politburo member and Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh was among honourable guests at the ceremony.

Deputy Secretary of Can Giuoc district’s Party Committee and Chairman of the district’s People’s Committee Nguyen Anh Dung announced the value of the donation, which is nearly VND600 million, including VND138 million for the construction of a bridge at Tan Thanh hamlet, Phuoc Lai commune, 14 houses of compassion for disadvantaged families worth VND30 million each, and 50 scholarships worth VND1 million each for disadvantaged students at Truong Van Bang and Nguyen Thi Mot Secondary Schools.

Can Giuoc Chairman Dung expressed his sincere thanks for support and sentiment expressed by Deputy PM Binh, who is also a Can Giuoc native, in mobilising and encouraging donors to assist Long An and Can Giuoc with practical gifts for many years.

On behalf of sponsors, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Bui The Tinh, Deputy Director of the Security and Investigation Department under the Ministry of Public Security expressed his sympathy to difficulties faced by the local government and people in the district, saying that contributions from officials and colleagues in the police force would help complete the bridge in Phuoc Lai commune to boost travel and trade.

At the ceremony, Deputy PM Binh awarded the Prime Minister's Certificate of Merit for Deputy General Director of Vietnam US Society English Centres JSC Tran Le Ngan for his outstanding achievements in charity-social work in a range of localities, including Long An. From 2011 to 2014, Ngan has donated approximately VND4.5 billion to Long An’s charity funds.

Earlier, on April 23, in Thanh Hoa and Duc Hue districts, Deputy PM Binh joined donors to present VND100 million each to Study Encouragement Fund of the two localities to facilitate education and training./.
