Cambodia annually imports around 100,000 tonnes of fresh vegetables worth roughly US$200 million from Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.
Secretary of State for the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Vonxay Visat, said Cambodia is running short of vegetables as its agricultural production heavily depends on rain-water due to poor irrigation system.
In fact, Vietnam has shipped fresh vegetables since 2009 with export volume increasing from 200 tonnes per day to more than 300 tonnes currently.
Traders in southern An Giang province alone export nearly 80 tonnes of fruit and vegetables to Cambodia daily, however, it still fails to meet the regional nation’s growing demand.
Vietnam- one of main trade partners of Cambodia- registered nearly US$3.3 billion in total trade in 2014./.
