The signing ceremony of cooperation agreement between VIASM and the Viet Capital Bank

Scientific Director of VIASM, Professor Ngo Bao Chau said at the signing ceremony that since summer 2013, through a workshop at VIASM, VIASM realized that although Vietnam’s mathematician community obtained certain achievements, apart from basic research, applied research remained weak.

Most mathematics researches haven’t found truly efficient application addresses. Through cooperation with the Viet Capital Bank, VIASM expects that LSAM will be the first step to kick off applied mathematics research, and contribute to raising the awareness and level and effectiveness of mathematics research and application in the fields of socioeconomic development, and finance and banking in Vietnam.

LSAM will be implemented annually by VIASM in many localities nationwide, such as Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City. Lecturers will be famous scientists. The cost of a lecture would include travelling, food and accommodation expenses in addition to remuneration higher than the normal.

Lectures will vary to serve perse beneficiaries, including ones with basic knowledge to be taken in universities for mathematics students, and highly technical lectures for those with high math knowledge. VIASM will record LSAM so the lectures can be made public and shared.

According to Professor Ngo Bao Chau, the cooperation is significant, as this is the first time a Vietnamese business to fully sponsor a scientific activity, without demanding anything, whether that practice is rather popular abroad. In finding funding to maintain scientific operations, foreign universities depend largely on the generosity of businesses, especially entrepreneurs that have close relationships with concerned universities, such as students’ parents, former students...

“Hopefully, VIASM’s LSAM will be prelude of Vietnamese businesses’ interest in scientific activities. Funding scientific activities though doesn’t produce such crowd effect as that related to sports and entertainment activities, but in the long run, will have a positive impact on the corporate image,” Professor Ngo Bao Chau stressed.

Nguyen Hoai Nam - Deputy General Director of the Viet Capital Bank said, sponsoring VIASM’s LSAM is part of the bank’s long-term strategy, which targets promoting science, education and sports-oriented activities, aimed to develop wisdom, capacity and health of Vietnamese. The bank will finance VIASM with US$10,000-15,000 each year for LSAM implementation.

The first lecture of LSAM - Interfaces and hysteresis in solid phase transformations - was given by Professor John Ball from the University of Oxford, UK at VIASM (Hanoi), in late August 2016. It is expected that the 2017 lecture - mathematics applications in climate change - will be given by Professor Henri Berestycki, former Director of the Center for Financial Mathematics, University of Chicago, USA.

Earlier, VIASM signed an agreement with the Joint Stock Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) to establish the Lab for Research and Application of Mathematics in Economics, Finance and Banking (FMathLab). The bank has pledged to finance this program with VND22 billion.
