(VEN) - Hoang Kim Cuong, the director of the Binh Phuoc Cement Plant said: "In the south, two large limestone mining sites include an open-cast mining site in Ha Tien District (Kien Giang Province) and an underground mining site in Binh Phuoc Province. Those limestone mining sites supply abundant materials resources for cement production. Hoang Kim Cuong spoke more about cement production in Binh Phuoc Province with Vietnam Economic News' Minh Quan.
Can you tell us about the limestone reserves in Binh Phuoc Province?
Geologists have discovered limestone mines in Binh Phuoc Province for a long time. However, before deciding to invest in the province, we had done a careful survey of the quality and quantity of limestone mines in the province. According to statistics, limestone mines in Binh Phuoc Province cover 300ha with reserves of 170 million tonnes. Such a large limestone reserves can meet demand of cement production for 50 years. Before discovering limestone mines in Binh Phuoc, our company had to buy limestone from northern provinces or import it from foreign countries. Thus, we had to pay a large amount of money for transport costs. Discovering abundant recourses of limestone in Binh Phuoc Province has created many favorable conditions for cement production in our plant.
What is the capacity of the Binh Phuoc Cement Plant? What benefits has the plant created to the society?
The Binh Phuoc Cement Plant has a capacity of one million tonnes of cement and 1.8 million tonnes of clinker per year. Half of this clinker is used to produce cement in the plant with the remainder is transported to the Ha Tien Cement Plant (in Ho Chi Minh City). Thanks to close production line with Germany technology and available abundant limestone resources, the plant has saved a large amount of money on transport, materials and fuel costs. In addition, the plant can produce high quality cement.
The Binh Phuoc Cement Plant has provided clinker at stable price for the Ha Tien Cement Plant. Therefore, it has helped Ha Tien Cement to reduce risks caused by imported materials and strengthen product competitiveness, contributing to creating jobs for 560 people. Forty percent of those people are within province, with the remainders are from Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces. Although the cement production sector does not create many jobs, it generates a motive force for support industries such as transport, trade and services in the regions near the cement plant.
What methods has the plant undertaken to protect the environment?
As you know, the plant is using an advanced technology imported from Germany. The production line meets European environmental protection standards. The Binh Phuoc Cement Plant is one of the most modern cement plants in the South East Asia. The plant is striving to build ISO: 14001 standards, that means the plant has to meet standards of waste treatment and management methods to protect the environment. It is estimated that the plant will receive ISO:14001 certification by the end of this year.
What are the plant's developmental directions in the future?
The Binh Phuoc Cement Plant is in accordance with the cement development strategy for 2001-2010 with a vision to 2020. The plant plays an important role, creating a motive force for the economic development in the southeast and Central Highland regions. Apart from contributing to stabilizing the cement market and creating jobs for local people, the plant helps increase the province budget revenue, promoting its cause of industrialization and modernization. To expand production and guarantee clinker resources to serve cement production, the plan is asking for permit to exploit a limestone mine in Thank Lung Commune, Hone Quan District, Binh Phuoc Province. It is estimated that the new plant which produces cement from limestone in Thank Lung Commune will start construction in 2013 and finish until 2015./.
